It seems to me that our villain seems to have a lot more character- and even genius- to him now that Patchwork Champions is no longer a webcomic. Okay, so his plans against the antiheroes didn't exactly pan out, and his fourth and fifth phases involved running and dying…
But on the other hand, He made a giant maze out of time and space warping materials, and apparently put a massive death fortress in the air to nuke anyone it felt like. He may still be quirky and somewhat hopeless, but his actual capabilities are showing up too, highlighted in a way that they certainly weren't before.

However, I can't decide whether this is because he and his craziness get to be described in more detail now, or because he (as he said) doesn't have to pull punches against the antiheroes.
Anyone else notice this or have comments to make on it?

Greetings, Amber, and welcome to the forums!

I can give you my opinions as author, but I'm not going to just yet, because I am also curious to see what other people think. Outside perspectives are awesome. After there have been a bunch of posts (or if time goes by and there aren't a ton of posts), I'll chime in with my intentions. ;)

From what I can personally draw from Ecchs, he's pure genius and is potentially the most dangerous person introduced in the story. Except for the fact, that as Friv notes in Ecchs profile; He enjoys the game more than the conquest. I get the distinct feeling that Ecchs views the world as something alike a complex game of chess: though he'd like to eventually win, he'll take a loss as long as he had fun along the way. Oh and he also has an instinctive urge do things exactly the WRONG way, just becuase its more fun that way. (like making three lefts instead of a right)

As for his potential, He's managed to create a weapon that can create a specific dimensional distortion (so far as to undo the past). That in itself more or less implies that he could control reality as he see fit, well, assuming he ever got the details down (something about not creating megalomaniacs).

He's also managed to make a laser-guarded fortress at the docks for less money than the contract to destroy the building (i mean we're talking handyman lasers-from-duct-tape level genius here). Though some of the earlier material I am suspicious of its complete cannonity with universe, Ecchs is a(n) [evil] businessman and if we note the appearance of the fortress in this last bit, If Ecchs actually stuck to run-of-the-mill villian procedures like lasers and atlantean anti-psi suits (remember senior thesis! …i think) instead of spending his efforts on absurd things like ninja-robot-zombie trees, he'd be playing the part of the oligarchs right now. In fact i wouldn't be surprised that the only reason Ecchs did something as hackneyed as make a flying death fortress was becuase he could HIDE IT IN PLAIN SIGHT (I mean who wouldn't do that, I know I would).

Really, I've really viewed him as more as an anti-hero than a villain. I mean, what kind of villain builds a multi-billion dollar business with the intention of squandering all profits on a war that he has no intention of winning? Oh yeah and half his company is friends with Lucky Ladd. And his 2nd-in-command is his arch-enemy's sister, and they (occasionally) have family dinners still.

Friv's maintainence of Ecchs as the quirky professor even into this critical time (as opposed to just druing lighthearted hijinks time) leads me to beleive that Ecchs is really really powerful, he just can't be bothered to do things in such boring ways.

Ecchs was always this powerful, I think it's just that two things helped this come up at about this time:
1) Shifting to text allows for a little bit more of the random quirkiness to shine through, and
2) The shift happened just as Ecchs, as you mentioned, Amber, decided to pull out all of the stops.

Ecchs has pulled off some staggeringly powerful tricks in the past, and is usually undermined by random chance, not caring enough, or not thinking things through rather than by a technological failure. Justef was definately right - he once rewrote the entire universe just so that he could outmanuever the Witch Doctor's hostile takeover of his company. Also, for all that he lost control of the ninja zombie trees, he created a stable army of superbeings in the city. Partially by mistake, yes, but he managed it.

I actually try to be careful with the Doctor, because he's the closest thing the comic has to an author-insert character (those who know my Livejournal identity probably already know that.) I have to make sure that he is honestly defeated by the Champions, and doesn't just run roughshod over them until he gets bored or luck intervenes. To be fair, this is a common problem with supervillains in comics (*couDOOMgh*).

If Ecchs had just slightly better luck, I imagine his story would be more than a little like that of this evil genius.
